Praise for LOVE MONSTER (by Rachel Bright)"A winning picture book by Rachel Bright. Each illustration is full of homey details that children will want to pore over." -SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL This is comforting, cozy, and just right for two-year-olds' story hours." -BOOKLISTPraise for FLORA'S SURPRISE! (by Debi Gliori) "Gliori's bright, cheerful, full-color watercolor-and-ink art fills the spreads with the lush abundance of spring, summer, and fall gardens. Gliori knows how to make much of a drooping shoulder, a pat on a child's head, and, of course, a clutching hand on a favorite blanket, finally found. The oversize ink-and-watercolor art is deceptively simple, offering large shapes that are easy for young eyes to take in. With the Monster, as with many a lonely soul, love arrives when he least expects it in this ultimately happy excursion for 2- to 5-year-olds." -THE WALL STREET JOURNALPraise for FLORA'S BLANKET (by Debi Gliori)"Gliori gets just about everything right here. In addition, he explains why the heartland of Central Eurasia led the world economically, scientifically, and artistically for many centuries despite invasions by Persians, Greeks, Arabs, Chinese, and others. Christopher Beckwith describes the rise and fall of the great Central Eurasian empires, including those of the Scythians, Attila the Hun, the Turks and Tibetans, and Genghis Khan and the Mongols. The first complete history of Central Eurasia from ancient times to the present day, Empires of the Silk Road represents a fundamental rethinking of the origins, history, and significance of this major world region. With narration by Jim Lee, who tells the epic story of the rise and fall of the Silk Road empires He went on to work as a storyboard artist for Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series, and in 1999 he animated the main title design for Batman Beyond. Animation after replying to an ad placed by animator Bruce Timm. In the early 1990s Cooke decided to return to comics, but found little interest for his work at the major publishers. In 1985, Cooke published his first comic book work as a professional artist in a short story in New Talent Showcase #19, but economic pressure made him leave the career and he worked in Canada as a magazine art director, graphic and product designer for the next 15 years. Darwyn Cooke was an Eisner Award winning comic book writer, artist, cartoonist and animator, best known for his work on the comic books Catwoman, DC: The New Frontier and Will Eisner's The Spirit. I had spouted off about it everywhere from The New York Times to the Los Angeles Times, from the Today show to FOX TV. I was supposed to be an expert on girls' behavior. While my friends, especially those who'd already had sons, braced themselves against disappointment should the delivery room doc announce, "It's a boy," I felt like the perpetual backseat driver who freezes when handed the wheel. Yet, when I finally got pregnant myself, I was terrified at the thought of having a daughter. Here is my dirty little secret: as a journalist, I have spent nearly two decades writing about girls, thinking about girls, talking about how girls should be raised. I returned to writing in 2004, and published my first novel with a small press in 2008. Serious writing started in my twenties, but after more than a decade trying to publish (and getting nowhere), I quit altogether. I first opened the door to my imagination with typewriter keys while playing hide and seek and finding a black behemoth when I just ten years old. Esrahaddon, the last book in the Rise and Fall trilogy, is almost done. When Inara is recounting what has happened at the Garden, the story is told from her voice. Hutchison does an excellent job at breaking up the story so that the reader is aware of who is narrating throughout the story. The story bounces between the Garden where she is referred to as Maya and the interview room where the FBI try to piece together what has happened at the Garden where she is referred to as Inara. Maya eventually reveals that her name is Inara and the names interchange throughout the story. At first, she tells them that her name is Maya and that the man who held her and multiple other girls captive, the Gardner, gave her that name. The main characters in The Butterfly Garden are the FBI agents Vic and Eddison, and a girl who survived all of the cruel and vile things that happened at the Garden. The Butterfly Garden and The Collector Series are not for the faint of heart as Hutchison has created an absolutely haunting story that is both breathtaking and horrifying. The Butterfly Garden falls under the genres of both a thriller and a police procedural as Hutchison weaves the story through Inara’s words now in a police interview room and as she reminisces on her past, including being held as a prisoner at the Garden. The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison was released in April 2016 and it is the first novel in The Collector Series which follows the same three FBI agents (Eddison, Vic, and Ramirez) throughout the novels. His family destroyed, their killer’s identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare–his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered. The second time was at home nearly two decades later. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field forever, and left him with an improbable side effect–he can forget nothing. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to play in the NFL. This “impossible to put down” #1 New York Times bestseller introduces Amos Decker, a gifted police detective with a perfect memory who must solve a mystery he wishes he could forget: his family’s murder ( Washington Post).Īmos Decker’s life changed forever–twice. She handle plot well, building momentum as she goes, tossing out one dark adventure after another. “You’ll live in one of those artsy, upscale apartments in Paris with your rich husband.” Actually, her fate is far more interesting - which is where Howard’s genius enters in. Jeb, the novel’s chief romantic interest, tells Alyssa, “You’re going to be a famous artist.” His voice is deep velvet - soothing and sure. Take this description of Morpheus: “He’s a contradiction: taut magic coiled to strike, gentleness at war with severity, a tongue as sharp as a whip’s edge, yet skin so soft he could be swathed in clouds.” The novel’s fantasies are typical middle school fantasies, rooted in rebellion, desire, ambition. There is lyricism, but little true poetry. “Splintered’’ is neither for the faint of heart, nor the lover of deep character or slow-building drama. One there, she faces a series of challenges proctered by the dark, brooding Morpheus whose allure is clear but whose motives are murky. When Alyssa’s mother, Allison, descends into deeper madness, Alyssa journeys to Wonderland with Jeb, her troubled, artsy friend, to find the solution to the ancestral curse. |
